Automatic Gates Overview
An automatic gate, often called a security gate, physically closes a site entrance and opens automatically for authorised people or vehicles. That is the key difference from parking gate barriers: a barrier manages traffic, while a closed gate actually stops it.
Vally World provides automatic sliding and swing gates for factories, warehouses, residential compounds and any facility that needs a secure perimeter. We handle the survey, supply, installation and maintenance for projects across Saudi Arabia.
The right gate depends on entrance width, the space around it, ground conditions and the level of protection required. Specifications are defined per project, based on opening size, usage and site conditions, after we have seen the entrance.
How It Works
An automatic gate combines one or more leaves, an operator, a controller and safety devices. Sliding gates travel sideways, either on a ground track or cantilevered with no track across the opening. Swing gates rotate on hinges, inward or outward.
-
Open command
Sent from a remote control, access control system or guard room button.
-
Leaf moves
The operator drives the leaf to its programmed full or partial open position.
-
Path monitoring
Photocells or safety edges watch the travel path and stop or reverse the gate if something is in the way.
-
Close and hold
The gate closes automatically or on command and holds its position.
Key Benefits
-
Perimeter protection
Closes the entrance fully against unauthorised vehicles and people.
-
Hands-free operation
Drivers and guards open it without leaving the vehicle or the booth.
-
Access integration
Works with access control systems and intercoms.
-
Safe movement
Safety devices reduce the risk of the gate striking a vehicle or person.
-
Fits different sites
Sliding and swing types cover a wide range of entrance layouts.
-
Consistent frontage
A gate designed to match the boundary wall gives the site a coherent look.
Typical Applications
Automatic gates suit sites that must be closed securely, either after hours or all the time:
Available Configurations
Gate type and equipment are defined per project after surveying the entrance. Options commonly considered include:
- Movement: tracked sliding, cantilever sliding, or single or double swing.
- Leaf design: bars, solid infill or a mix, depending on privacy needs.
- Pedestrian access: a wicket door in the leaf or a separate side gate.
- Controls: remotes, readers, intercom or guard room operation.
- Safety devices: photocells, safety edges and warning lights.
- Power failure behaviour: manual release or backup power, depending on design.
- Finish: colour and coating suited to outdoor exposure and the boundary design.
Selection Factors
- Entrance width: sets leaf size, number of leaves and feasible movement types.
- Side space: a sliding gate needs room beside the opening to park the leaf.
- Swing clearance: a swing gate needs a clear arc in its opening direction.
- Ground conditions: slopes and uneven surfaces can favour one type over another.
- Traffic type: private cars, heavy trucks or pedestrians.
- Protection level: influences leaf design and locking.
- Climate: wind, dust and heat shape component and finish selection.
Installation Considerations
Automatic gates need precise civil works: foundations for the operator and posts, a level track for tracked sliding gates, or a roller base for cantilever types. Power, control and safety cabling must be in place before the entrance is finished.
- Entrance, side space and swing arc measured.
- Concrete foundations for operator and posts.
- Level track or cantilever roller base prepared.
- Power supply and cable ducts for control and safety devices.
- Control and reader positions agreed.
Our gate installation team handles fitting and testing. If you plan to link the gate to an access system, see our article on access control solutions for buildings.
Maintenance
Automatic gates face dust, heat and repeated heavy loads outdoors. Preventive maintenance keeps them moving smoothly, keeps safety devices effective and extends component life.
- Track, rollers or hinges cleaned and inspected.
- Operator checked and travel limits adjusted.
- Photocells and safety edges tested.
- Controller and wiring inspected.
- Manual release and locking tested.
- Leaf alignment and coating condition checked.
